I will try to make the german subs today, I think I will have fun with these ones. I am a sucker for sience fiction stories like blue meteroite, it reminded me of Vladimir Tarasovs style like in contract.

I don't know if I will finish 'em today, after all I've already wasted time creating these images

>But poetry is not only about rimes, it's also about metre and stylistic devices,
Yeah, I try to keep the metre similar if I can't make it rhyme. Although if I think there's still a decent possibility that it can be done better with enough effort (by making it rhyme while keeping the translation close, even if it would be really difficult), I'll usually rate the subs "Ok" instead of "Good". I prefer to err toward the critical end in ratings.

>I've noticed that the time on this site is GMT -8, is it located in the west of the US?
I think the server is, though the hosting company is Indian.
-8 isn't actually even my time zone; I guess it just never bothered me.

>Impressive goal. I don't think all of them are even subtitled yet. I've got English subs for #1-13 & 18, but I think a lot of the text still needs revision...
In the meantime I've contacted Teenator and told him I was working on carousel, and he offered me his help! I still have to write him back on this

I have thought about that forum thing and think it would be a good idea. There are thoughts of mine that I would certainly like to create topics and discussions about. You could even link some threads like an FAQ

Yes, of course something like this exists in German, but in this case it would have been of little use to me, since I ignored rimes completelyI. It would have been to much of a hassle to implement and and would have interfered with my other goals. But poetry is not only about rimes, it's also about metre and stylistic devices, so enough room to play around (even though I mostly kept it simple, trying to create iambs and trochees). Well, poetry ain't easy.

This is unrelated, but I've noticed that the time on this site is GMT -8 (edit: it's actually GTM -7, my bad), is it located in the west of the US?

>So now I am finally done withe the german subs for this one.
Thanks, I added it in along with a few changes (not to the subs, to the other info).

>I spend half an eternity to get it to a point where I felt pleased with my work.
Likewise for the English, for me. Poetry is hard. I use rhymezone.com and thesaurus.com to help - maybe something like those exist for German, too?
>I hope my efforts are noticeable.
Always the hope, though I suspect only a fellow translator really notices a lot of this. :) You can try posting a link on some relevant German-language community (Reddit?) or maybe the German Wikipedia to get more people seeing it.

Except you can edit and delete your posts. ;)

>Ok, I've submitted the German subs for this vid.
Thanks!
>I've created a new profile to use my real name, after all I wanne be credited under my real name.
Hm, a bit drastic - maybe I need to add a way for people to change their usernames... I don't think that would be hard (though I'd still keep a record of the very first username they signed up as, to prevent confusion)
>I plan on creating subs for the whole carousel series
Impressive goal. I don't think all of them are even subtitled yet. I've got English subs for #1-13 & 18, but I think a lot of the text still needs revision...

>Ok, will do
It's really easy & quick to submit a title through that page, try it out! :)

So now I am finally done withe the german subs for this one.

For небылицы I tried to hit a sweet spot between poesy, literalness and timing, and I think this time literalness and timing were more importand, since this cartoon often plays with the contrast of the spoken words and what is actually shown on screen. I spend half an eternity to get it to a point where I felt pleased with my work. Also I am not a russian pro yet, so I had to look up a lot of words and even some grammar. I hope my efforts are noticeable.

Ok, I've submitted the German subs for this vid. I've created a new profile to use my real name, after all I wanne be credited under my real name. If anybody is interested check out the translation notes. Also if anybody spots any mistake, please let me know. I plan on creating subs for the whole carousel series

>You can just change the number in the URL (after "page=") if you want to skip a few pages
Oh, I didn't think of that

>If you want to do another useful thing, check the "Submit>Add Multiple" page to find the wordless films whose titles have not yet been translated into German (at this point, it's most of them)
Ok, will do

>but a forum where one could create a new topic for public discussion would be nice.
Yes, that was my thought... that it would allow somebody to start a new discussion topic that wasn't about a specific film.
>I like to scroll through the diskussion site, but it's pretty slow to get through, maybe adding page links at the top and/or bottom like [1 2 3 4 5 6 >next >>last] would help?
Hmm, not sure I follow. You can just change the number in the URL (after "page=") if you want to skip a few pages.

>I've started to also translate stuff on here into German, my native language, it's actually pretty easy and fun by working of the russian subs.
Good luck! I'd definitely like some more German subs. For such a major language, I haven't been able to find very many, or I just don't know where to look.
If you want to do another useful thing, check the "Submit>Add Multiple" page to find the wordless films whose titles have not yet been translated into German (at this point, it's most of them).
You can also sort the films list by "Wordiness" to find the films with the smallest subtitle files (i.e. the least work to translate, unless there's poetry) - you'll need to skip the first 14 pages which will be "0" (wordless) to get to the films with little to translate - e.g. "Hotel E", "Clinic", "War", "The Mitten".

>If I am confident in my translation, should I tick off subtitle quality as good
Sure. Though I may edit the rating if another German speaker complains (if two German-speakers disagree, I may even change it back to "unknown"). Teenator has submitted a number of German subtitles to the site recently - if you want to be safe, you can coordinate to make sure you're not working on the same projects.

>and should I write into the notes that I translated it myself?
You can add your username as the subtitle creator. In the notes, you could talk about things like any translation difficulties.

>If I worked of another ones russian subs, should I also cite him as a creator?
You could, and mark his role as "Secondary". To be honest, if somebody did the timings, the important thing to me is their name is mentioned on the first file they contributed to. I haven't been super consistent about subsequent ones; if I know that somebody was responsible for the timings in a certain subtitle file I'll include their name, but I don't always do that if somebody took an existing subtitle file in one language and translated that into another one.

>You may have noticed that the commenting system has some similarities
Yes, I immediately noticed that it was like an imageboard

>so I had the idea to create a more permanent archive.
I really like the whole concept of that site, not only is everything archived, but all the movies are organized after topic, style, creator, etc. which makes it easy to find more interesting stuff. I also like the additional info about the staff and movies in the descriptions of this site

>Do you think I should I create a more traditional discussion forum (or forums) so people have a place to talk about the site and its contents outside of PMs and film discussion pages? The commenting system already exists...
Since the active community is still pretty small the commenting system and discussion site suffice for the purpose of public discussion, but a forum where one could create a new topic for public discussion would be nice. I like to scroll through the diskussion site, but it's pretty slow to get through, maybe adding page links at the top and/or bottom like [1 2 3 4 5 6 >next >>last] would help?

I've started to also translate stuff on here into German, my native language, it's actually pretty easy and fun by working of the russian subs. If I am confident in my translation, should I tick off subtitle quality as good and should I write into the notes that I translated it myself? If I worked of another ones russian subs, should I also cite him as a creator?
