Description:
Stories from the Pomors; people who live by the White Sea in Russia's far north.
A good article about these people can be read here.
The film compiles a number of Nosyrev's previous films, adding scenes with a storyteller in between. The very last film was also released separately, but that seems to have happened after its release as part of the feature; the separate release has an awkward jump at one point near the very end that isn't present in the feature film. Nosyrev's 1978 film "Rain", which is also about the Pomors, wasn't included.
The last tale is based upon a real carved epitaph that was found on a nameless island in the Arctic Ocean, dated autumn 1857. The art and text carved onto it was recorded by Boris Shergin. The name "Ondriyan" is changed to "Andrian" in the film, and the epitaph is somewhat shortened from the original.
The first of the two videos above is slightly sharper and less cropped, but the second has somewhat better colours.
